Portraits come with a ‘click’ – sometimes with a ‘clack’

Can a portrait be taken with a typewriter? Such question sprang to my mind when, in Waterstones’ London bookshop in Piccadilly (on a display table aptly named “Typographical titillation”), I came across a delightful book by Marvin and Ruth Sackner, “The art of typewriting” (Thames & Hudson).

Portrait photographer & videomaker | Manchester | A book in the making @_when.in.manchester

A very warm welcome to those who have recently sta A very warm welcome to those who have recently started following this feed! So let me introduce myself – I am a portrait photographer based in Manchester and, as you might have guessed, I specialise in portraiture.

Why portraits and not food or landscapes? Short answer: because portraits are always tales of two halves.
I believe that a real emotional connection, even a short one, is the key to authentic portraiture – which is much more than striking a pose. I’ve learnt that listening to people during a shooting is more critical than photoshopping them afterwards.

Each sitter is unique, and each portrait session is unique. A session has always taught me something, no matter how short.
Feed your curiosity, be respectful, and always learn – these are the guiding stars of my practice as a portrait photographer.

I’ve helped many talented people – actors and musicians, dancers and writers, composers and models (like Dilan Hewa in this one) – show their true selves in portraits. Are you going to be my next sitter?

Retired police officer Asif Hussain is one of the Retired police officer Asif Hussain is one of the several Mancunians who have kindly agreed to pose for my project "When in Manchester" @_when.in.manchester

I had already met Asif – we went back to places that had a strong connection with his work as an officer on the beat. He was very generous in driving me around Greater Manchester while sharing so many interesting stories of cops and robbers – and more...
Here he is in Openshaw, an area that he knows like the back of his hand!

These days, Asif is frequently cast as a police officer or prison officer in films and ads – given his past, his performances are definitely credible!

PS: If you are not a follower of my @_when.in.manchester account, please give it a follow. And if you'd like to be involved in the project, or if you know a Mancunian who would like to participate, please give me a shout. Thank you!

This portrait is from the book “PROPERTY.”, a multi-layered tactile photo thriller I curated and published in 2023.

PROPERTY. is a site-responsive art project, where a photographer-writer (me) and a model artist have explored (and have been inspired by) a building currently living on borrowed time, as it will be demolished soon. The book also features short stories and poems written by 11 wordsmiths in response to photos they were sent without any information about the context where the images were taken or the person portrayed.

As many of you know, I am working on my second book, When in Manchester: please head to @_when.in.manchester to know all about it!
