Portraits come with a ‘click’ – sometimes with a ‘clack’

Can a portrait be taken with a typewriter? Such question sprang to my mind when, in Waterstones’ London bookshop in Piccadilly (on a display table aptly named “Typographical titillation”), I came across a delightful book by Marvin and Ruth Sackner, “The art of typewriting” (Thames & Hudson).

Janean Moulden moved to Australia from Manchester Janean Moulden moved to Australia from Manchester when she was 12 and she spent more than 30 years "down there". In 2021 her husband Randall, a police officer, took his life – he suffered from PTSD after attending, years earlier, a quadruple road fatality. Now Janean is back in Manchester since May – "I am finding it easier to grieve here the death of my husband", she told me. "I am home – I thought when I landed in the UK".

Janean's story is, by far, one of the most intense and authentic among those I've listened to for the "When in Manchester" series.

I am deeply humbled by Janean's desire not only to share her story with me, but also to pose for my project. When I asked her where she wanted to be portrayed, she didn't hesitate: "In the Northern Quarter!"

PORTRAYING TOBIAS FARRELL  |  From our very firs PORTRAYING TOBIAS FARRELL  |  From our very first chat, Tobias was very enthusiastic about taking part in the "When in Manchester" project. And when I interviewed him, he gave me a great insight: "I like Manchester because of the busyness – it brings like joy when you just think about it."

We went for a sort of fashion style portrait, because: "I do really like fashion, so I do wear a lot of 'out there' clothes – I like to express my personality through the way that I dress."

We went to Saint John's Gardens (it's around Deansgate) and Saint John Street, which has a London vibe in my opinion, as you can see from the first portrait in this short clip, filmed by the brilliant Liam Scarth and edited by me.

Please watch it as it gives a flavour of how the portrait sessions pan out.

I am so so grateful to Tobias and to all the other participants for being so generous in taking part in "When in Manchester". And if you'd like to be involved in the project, or if you know a Mancunian who would like to take part in it, please give me a shout. Thank you!

This is a portrait I took of Lauren Temple and her This is a portrait I took of Lauren Temple and her inseparable beret at Buile Hill Park in Salford, at the end of our portrait session for my @_when.in.manchester project.

Lauren is a poet and writer, she is part of the poetry collective Young Identity @youngidentitymcr
Please visit her profile @laurentemplepoet to read her work, which often explores mental health, emotional inheritance, domestic abuse, neurodiversity and dementia.

When she isn’t writing poetry, Lauren works as an Activities Coordinator in a care home, teaching poetry to the residents – which is a wonderful thing to do!

Thank you Lauren for posing for my project and also for reciting your poems to me  – I felt so privileged.

I had the great pleasure to portray Tobias for my When in Manchester project – thanks to his candour and sense of style, he definitely brought the series to another, exciting level!

I am very happy for Zuzana Spacirova as her short I am very happy for Zuzana Spacirova as her short theatre piece "Beyond Borders" is coming to Southwark Playhouse in London as part of HOUSE/HOME this coming Sunday 10th July.

Zuzana is a Slovak-born, London-based performer and writer. Her credits include the critically acclaimed Twelfth Night at the Young Vic theatre and the BFI-backed short film I SEE. "Beyond Borders" is her first experience as a writer and she is currently developing the piece into a full-length play. It's a coming-of-age story that explores themes of belonging, identity and home – written and performed by her (and directed by Oettie Devries).

Zuzana was involved in my "Conversations about Beauty" series. I have fond memories of the sessions we had at my portrait studio in London, which led to some beautiful portraits like this one.

Well done Zuzana – and break a leg!
