We made it, therefore we pose

The young man says just two words – “photo, please!”. But they mean a lot, to him and to his family.

Best known for his novel A Clockwork Orange, Manch Best known for his novel A Clockwork Orange, Manchester-born novelist, poet and playwright Anthony Burgess was also a prolific composer and musician, writing three symphonies and more than 150 other musical works.

Among the collection of his pieces for solo piano stands this “Untitled Piano Piece” – a moving, song-like piano composition that award-winning pianist Richard Casey performs with quiet command and heartfelt intensity.

Richard’s performance of “Untitled Piano Piece” was filmed at St Elizabeth’s Church in Ashley (Cheshire) and directed by Rino Pucci (Alexine Puglisi, 2nd camera; Stephen Plews, sound engineer).

The church, in a lovely rural setting, is late Victorian and over 140 years old and, with its beautiful stained-glass windows and carved pews, provided the perfect setting for such a moving and delicate piece.

The video is produced by The Lemon Twist, Manchester.

Rino writes ✒️ : Model and actress Esi Darmma is celebrating 10 years of modelling, and to mark this significant milestone, I am posting two of her headshots, that truly exemplify her two different casting types: the sophisticated lady and the next-door girl.

I had the great privilege to take Esi’s first headshots for her Spotlight profile. Esi is a pleasure to work with! It was a very productive photo session and I still remember the conversation we had about headshots and “normal” portraits.

Here’s to many more years of creativity, Esi! 🥂

It’s the in-between moments I love, when the sitter is lost in their thoughts, simply waiting for a change of backdrop or to put on their next outfit.
Silence, and then “click!”.

As a portrait photographer based in Manchester, I’ve helped many talented people – actors and musicians, dancers and writers, composers and models – stand out from the crowd with authentic, contemporary portraits.

Every sitter is unique, and so is every portrait session. I believe that a real emotional connection, even a short one, is the key to authentic portraiture – which is much more than striking a pose.
Are you going to be my next sitter?

There is a subtle pleasure in digging up an old ha There is a subtle pleasure in digging up an old hard drive and looking through past portrait sessions.
Take this portrait I made of Harry May, a while ago. I remember very little about its circumstances – it might have been taken during a workshop I attended.
What does this portrait tell me today? Was Harry holding it still as instructed, or had I managed to catch one of those unanticipated moments “in between”? The truth is – it doesn’t matter.

Writer and curator David Campany has written at length about the intrinsic ambiguity of photographic images:
“Photographs have a way of covering their traces – when you look at a photograph, it’s often hard to know how it was made or why it was made, and that produces an anxiety. So people often want to know that and think that that’s the meaning.”
This is also true for the photographer himself.

I mainly work on commissioned portraits, which means that mostly I need to look at them almost straightaway – clients require them as soon as possible. But whenever it is possible – test sessions, personal projects like books, etc. – I leave the photos to age. I like looking at them months later and listening to the right music in my headphones that takes me somewhere else. A different era, a different mindset. Sometimes the magic happens: I can see these images as if they were taken by someone else.

I am a photographer based in Manchester and, as you might have guessed, I specialise in portraiture. I’ve helped many talented people – actors and musicians, dancers and writers, composers and models – show their true selves in portraits.
Every sitter is unique, and so is every portrait session. I believe that a real emotional connection, even a short one, is the key to authentic portraiture – which is much more than striking a pose.
