David Bowie's mugshot taken by police department, Rochester N.Y, in 1976

Mugshot – the portrait offer you can’t refuse

There is definitely something morbid about our fascination with police mugshots – the outcome of what is easily the most uncomfortable of all portrait sessions.

This portrait is from the book PROPERTY. a multi-layered tactile photo thriller I curated and published in 2023.
PROPERTY. is a site-responsive art project, where a photographer-writer (me) and a model artist have explored (and have been inspired by) a building currently living on borrowed time, as it will be demolished soon. The book also features short stories and poems written by 11 wordsmiths in response to photos they were sent without any information about the context where the images were taken or the person portrayed.
As many of you know, I am working on my second book, When in Manchester: please head to @_when.in.manchester to know all about it!

Rino writes ✒️: When planning her portrait for the When in Manchester project, Amy and I agreed that the photo should convey her love for country music and Western fashion.

Amy said: “I was brought up on country music by my Mum (which is quite strange for a UK girl!). I lost her when I was 19, but clearly that love for country was always there, and I always listened to bits as I guess it felt familiar and reminded me of her. And then as I got a bit older I fully got into it, there’s so much now! I love it all and constantly listen to new music and classic country.”

Before starting our exploration of suburbia on a grey and rainy summer morning, we needed a caffeine boost. Amy took me to her favourite coffee shop, Kiosk on Lapwing in West Didsbury – it’s the smallest coffee shop I’ve ever seen, and quite possibly among the cutest in town (I do have a soft spot for open brickwork revealed).

That was a good start. We took so many good photos. I am very grateful.
Allegedly, it’s summer, but not in Manchester. 1 Allegedly, it’s summer, but not in Manchester. 19° and it rains. Yesterday was the same. Tomorrow’s forecast is roughly the same.

Throwback to a few moons ago, when summers looked like summers and Poppy H wore sunglasses like a diva.
