Portraits come with a ‘click’ – sometimes with a ‘clack’

Can a portrait be taken with a typewriter? Such question sprang to my mind when, in Waterstones’ London bookshop in Piccadilly (on a display table aptly named “Typographical titillation”), I came across a delightful book by Marvin and Ruth Sackner, “The art of typewriting” (Thames & Hudson).

Some portraits feel less like records and more lik Some portraits feel less like records and more like reminders: the hush of a room gone still, the warmth that lingers, the almost cinematic sense that time has paused for a heartbeat.

Some will read this as a pensive mood, others as a toasty, cosy atmosphere – but it always comes back to the comfort of being unhurried, the simple act of sitting with one’s thoughts.

Portrait of Simone Lomax by Rino Pucci, made in Manchester.

If you’d like to have a portrait that holds a mood or a memory in this way, Rino’s sessions in Manchester are now open for booking.

“Just one more picture, Mark. The light is perfect and you look great.”
“Thank you.”

Mark Thomson is a retired firefighter and he took part in my “When in Manchester” portrait project, which will become a book.

If you are not yet following my @_when.in.manchester account, I would be very happy if you gave it a follow. And if you would like to be involved in the project – or if you know a Mancunian who might – please do as Mark did and give me a shout.

AQUARIUM | Throwback to the time I painted a full‑length backdrop from a massive cardboard roll, layering light blue and white like a fairytale seabed – and Amy L walked into the studio in an outfit that was perfectly in tune with the portrait I had in mind.

I can’t promise I’ll always paint a fresh backdrop from scratch – but I can promise we’ll create a portrait that’s very much yours.

I’m now booking portrait sessions in Manchester from April onwards. DM to book and secure your date.

There’s a special tension in those in‑between moments: shirt creased, tie undone, posture softening as the performance drops away.
Here, the lighting nods to old‑school Hollywood – carving out Miles’ silhouette, catching the fabric of his attire, and letting his unguarded pause live in the frame. ✨

Best known for his novel A Clockwork Orange, Manch Best known for his novel A Clockwork Orange, Manchester-born novelist, poet and playwright Anthony Burgess was also a prolific composer and musician, writing three symphonies and more than 150 other musical works.

Among the collection of his pieces for solo piano stands this “Untitled Piano Piece” – a moving, song-like piano composition that award-winning pianist Richard Casey performs with quiet command and heartfelt intensity.

Richard’s performance of “Untitled Piano Piece” was filmed at St Elizabeth’s Church in Ashley (Cheshire) and directed by Rino Pucci (Alexine Puglisi, 2nd camera; Stephen Plews, sound engineer).

The church, in a lovely rural setting, is late Victorian and over 140 years old and, with its beautiful stained-glass windows and carved pews, provided the perfect setting for such a moving and delicate piece.

The video is produced by The Lemon Twist, Manchester.
