“The lighter you are the more successful you are “The lighter you are the more successful you are”.

"Bleached Out" is a short film written by Jasmine M Stewart and Jess Philogene which wants to create and reinforce awareness regarding skin bleaching – still a very prominent practice in black, brown and developing communities/ nations.

Their crowdfunding campaign is now live on Indiegogo. I warmly encourage you to donate – please head to @bleachedoutfilm for more details.  It's such an important topic, and the writers' intention is to destigmatise the conversation in hopes of bringing light to what is a quiet epidemic.

Jasmine – here in a portrait I took of her in London – is an actress, writer and voice over artist. Her credits include Line of Duty, Emmerdale, Casualty and Not Going Out, among others. In "Bleached Out", Jasmine will play Hortence Spencer – a queer black woman searching for belonging who aspires to be a successful journalist.

Rino writes 🖊️:

The eyes, the eyes... it's all about the eyes!

When it comes to headshots, this is a bit of a weary mantra that photographers and performers continue to kid themselves with.

Yes, eyes need to be visible and well-lit. Yes, eyes should look into the camera. Yes, it would be nice if there is a catchlight glimmering in the eye... BUT what really counts is how engaged and alive the whole face looks!

The eye is just a hook to draw someone's attention – one might say that the muscles controlling the sitter's facial expressions play an even bigger role.

So it's all about the heart. Or the mind. Or the soul. Or the energy. It doesn't matter what you call this attitude, you need to have it – you need to engage with the photographer and, ultimately, engage with the audience.

For example, take this headshot of the actor and director David Furlong – a versatile and very experienced stage, screen and street performer (and also the artistic director and producer at the Exchange Theatre in London). His eyes are only the "punctum" that captures your attention, but it's his overall expression that gives the portrait strength and meaning.

Who said that headshots need to be taken in the st Who said that headshots need to be taken in the studio, with artificial light?
Of course, taking headshots in nature takes us photographers out of our comfort zone. The background is not always "right". The light might be just too harsh. Having passers-by around doesn't really help.

And yet sometimes leaving the studio to go outdoors is a rewarding decision. It opens one's mind – and one's lungs. It allows one to create something different, within the "grammar" of the headshot.

All you need to bring is a reflector.
