  • Getting portraits commissioned by fellow creative practitioners is always a great opportunity to learn about different practices. Take Laura Ella for example – she is a costume creative, pattern cutter and printed textile artist.   • To start the week in glory, here is a portrait from a recent session with the very talented Aprine Tan @aprine_ – she is giving the camera a questioning stare which I find absolutely striking. I am recently working a lot in finding new colour schemes and I feel like this portrait is a great step forward – I love how her expression is subtly enhanced by the muted palette of the painted backdrop.   • There is something timeless about Natalie Ciufo Green’s poised features in this image that is going to strengthen an already thick and varied portfolio of her as an actor and performer. It’s a portrait which nods to a bygone era, maybe the Fifties, where things had more substance and a certain look could equate to delivering a clean-cut statement , like “take me or leave me”. “When discussing casting – Natalie says – I’m often told that I have a bit of quirky and androgynous look, then let me own it! We should celebrate and use what makes us unique, not try and alter ourselves to ‘who we think others want to see’.” As a photographer, I feel like this image is very much the visual translation of Natalie’s  remarkable attitude: “It’s important to remain honest and humble yet still show your drive. You have to have a lot of determination, discipline, passion and love for what you do. You have to be unapologetic in who you are, your decisions, self belief and dreams. I think this image has managed to capture this completely.” Salvador Dalí once said: “I am the first to be surprised and often terrified by the images I see appear upon my canvas.” As a photographer, I am surprised more than anyone else (without being terrified, I should say) if an image can convey so much and still look so neat, so essential.   • As I am a proud Hotel Elephant member, I recently had the great pleasure to be interviewed by @hotelelephant director Emily Woodhouse for its blog. The link to the full interview is in my bio. I was asked about my photography practice and my overall career and also about the site-responsive art project “Out of (this) place”, which has been already mentioned a few times in this feed as it has been inspired by the building that houses my London studio here at Harper Road. Playing on words, this long-term project is called “Out of (this) place”, to stress that the “here and now” of this place is so different from its past and its foreseeable future.
