The reason behind sharing this portrait of Tineke The reason behind sharing this portrait of Tineke Robson – taken when we both used to live in London – is because Tineke, now in native New Zealand, is doing an 8-week boxing challenge and she has chosen to fundraise for Trees for Survival. They provide opportunities for schoolchildren to make a practical difference to their environment by planting trees.

Yes, that's right, planting trees. As the Chinese proverb goes, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."

The amazing thing is that, in the process, kids learn about conservation, revegetation, wetland restoration and protecting stream quality.

I am finding Tineke's challenge very inspiring and I would like to invite you all to head to her profile and get inspired too. Donate if you can, or maybe help plant a tree wherever you live, or maybe explain to your child why trees are vital for our wellbeing.

Big kudos to Tineke for her dedication to a great cause. Even if she has a different hairstyle at the moment, she still has a sparkle in her eyes and a big heart.

LONG READ "When in Manchester" is my series of BW LONG READ
"When in Manchester" is my series of BW urban portraits that I started 8 months ago with the purpose of connecting with my new city and those who call it home – through portraiture.
I thought of doing it just to give myself an excuse to break free from the four walls of my studio and use Manchester as the perfect background for my portrait photography; but, session after session, the series has proven to be much more than that.
Meeting Mancunians of all walks of life is giving me A LOT – it's not just teaching me how to portray people outdoors, but it's energising my life on dark days. They – the sitters – are showing me places I have never heard of, they are sharing with me their personal stories of connection with Manchester.
One of the things that I've learnt along the way is that in Manchester it's very easy to involve people on your creative journeys. Many are reaching out to help, to be part of it. And those who have already their portrait taken are keeping in touch.

(I will write a separate post to mention and thank everyone involved in the project. It's a long list.)

My dream would be to make a book out of these portraits. It's not easy and it will require a lot of work, including hard choices, I am aware of it. Nevertheless, I keep dreaming and working hard on this, as I feel like it's taking shape, bit after bit.

Let's be clear: "When in Manchester" is NOT a series of images of people portrayed in their favourite place. I do ask participants to take me to places in Manchester that have a special meaning for them, but this is just a way to trigger memories and emotions. We are free to go somewhere else, if we feel so.

Eva Lewis – a poet, editor and all-round creative soul – brought me to the Ivy Green, in Chorlton.

Eva says: "This is the place that I go when I really need nature. I love the forest, the lights, and I brought you to this particular fence because I love finding the ways that nature comes through, the gaps..."

Please watch this short video. Eva talks about the power of photography to make one see familiar places in a new way, perfectly summarising the spirit of this project. I couldn't have formulated it better.

🎭
A very gifted actor and a true gentleman, Peter is the best client a photographer can wish for – calm and focused during the headshot session, he left me a stellar review that made my day. One of those people I feel I can always learn something from.

And this heashot exudes so much charisma, don't you think? 🎯

Congratulations to the extremely talented violinis Congratulations to the extremely talented violinist Shlomy Dobrinsky on launching his new website.
Shlomy is currently guest Leading the London Concert Orchestra, and Associate Leader for the Oxford Philharmonic, and has guest co-lead BBC Scottish, Luzern Symphony, LPO, ECO, RSNO, BBC NOW, RPO amongst others.
I had the great pleasure to take his portraits.

Shlomy is not only exceptionally good at playing the violin, he also plays with love. “Music has been a wonderful form for self-expression. I particularly enjoy the transformation of sound into emotional meaning”, says Shlomy.
He has been praised by the Strad magazine as a "poised and calmly confident player".

Congratulations Shlomy and... ad maiora!

A derelict warehouse, old bricks, a rusty door – A derelict warehouse, old bricks, a rusty door – this is so Manchester, isn't it?

And if Andrian Sharples looks like a guitar player... well, he is!

We went somewhere on Oldham Road, where I took Andrian's portrait for my "When in Manchester" project. What I like the most about it is that it's enabling me to meet kind people, willing to pose for this project – and Andrian is one of the most gentle person I've met.

PS: if you are not a follower of my @_when.in.manchester account, please give it a follow. And if you'd like to be involved in the project, or if you know a Mancunian who would like to take part in it, please give me a shout. Thank you!

I love my work as it allows me to meet wonderful p I love my work as it allows me to meet wonderful people like Oluwatoyin @meademusings
She is a podcast creator and host, but also a model and actress.
Her podcast aims to raise awareness about disabilities and critical illnesses, by breaking societal stigmas on people living with these disabilities and the real everyday societal issues.

Oluwatoyin recently commissioned me to take a few portraits of her for her social media feed. When we met, she told me: "We highlight different ways people are getting through these illnesses. I share these to encourage others who may be going through similar trying times".

I warmly encourage you to check out her podcast at this link: https://pod.link/1522556528 It's a very interesting listen!
