We chose not to reveal Bea's broad, open smile – which is beautiful – in order to explore a more subtle look.
Call it "an inner smile", call it "the smile from within"... I think we've cracked it!

Bea says: "Rino and I wanted to do something different from my other pictures/portraits. During the photoshoot I mentioned that I am usually cast as a friendly girl in her 20s, which is what I am, but that I was recently cast as a villain in a film. We weren't going for a villain in this photoshoot, but I wanted to see myself in a new light."
"I think that black and white portraits are timeless and sophisticated. I have never had portraits taken in black and white and I am very happy with the results. It adds to the mystery!"

Oh, this brings back many memories... I've spent so many hours having coffee or cocktail at this wooden counter, getting lost in my thoughts just looking at the intricate Art Deco mosaics covering the walls.

"Zucca in Galleria" is not just a café – it's a Milanese landmark since 1867. In pole position on the corner of Piazza del Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, it was the favourite place of Giuseppe Verdi and Arturo Toscanini, who used to stop there after their performances at the nearby Scala. Umberto Boccioni even portrayed it in the famous painting "The Brawl in the Galleria".

One day, after a long, silent courtship, I asked the manager if I could spend a couple of hours taking pictures, to which he agreed. I was fascinated by the waiters – elegant, laid back and quintessentially Italian. After a while, as it happens, they didn't pay attention to my camera anymore – that's when things became interesting.

I've been told that now it's under new management, so that its name has changed, but for me, it will always be "Zucca in Galleria" – and I can't wait to go back there and gulp back a tiny espresso while doing some serious people watching.

"Father?" Pinocchio called.
"Pinocchio, is that you?" Geppetto called back. Even though they were inside a smelly fish, they had never been happier. They ran across the whale’s stomach and held each other.
"Oh, Father. You are very thin. I am sorry it took me so long to find you. Please forgive me," Pinocchio said.

Like many Italians, Pinocchio's Adventures had a huge impact on me. When I was a child, I loved reading the book and also watching the film on TV – I mean the one directed by Luigi Comencini, not the crap Disney version!

Fast forward to May 2003, San Siro Stadium.
While Inter Milan and AC Milan teams were warming up, I couldn't help running into the retractable players' tunnel to take a picture.
It looked like I was seeing the pitch from the whale's stomach.

When in Milan, I had no car. The company I worked for offered me one, but I kindly refused.
I used to cycle most of the time – those stone-paved, back-breaking roads are still very fresh in my mind. Some other times, I would have been that chap on the tram, staring from the window, lost in his thoughts.

LIBERTÉ EGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ | I guess the gendarme on the right felt sorry for me, thinking that I had lost my chance to photograph the Minister of the Interior Nicolas Sarkozy addressing the journalists ahead of his meeting with President Jacques Chirac at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

What the gendarme didn't know is that, as usual, I was more interested in taking pictures of the whole liturgy of power, including the press corps and the gendarme himself.

This has been a week saddened by Franco Battiato's

This has been a week saddened by Franco Battiato's death.

Hugely popular as a singer-songwriter in Italy, Battiato never stopped experimenting. He composed for movies, opera and ballet, directed films and painted.

Italy's President Sergio Mattarella, in a statement, called him “a cultured and refined artist who charmed a vast public, even beyond national borders, with his unmistakable musical style – a product of intense studying and feverish experimentation.”

A true son of Sicily, his humility was as conspicuous as his talent. I've been a big fan of Battiato since I was a teenager – I think I owe him my love for music to a great extent.

As dance was very important to him (one of his most famous songs is "Voglio vederti danzare" – I want to see you dance), I thought of celebrating the life of Franco Battiato by sharing an image of mine I am very fond of.
